About the Program

Financial Knowledge. Generational Wealth.

The Minnesota Africans United Homeownership & Financial Literacy Program is designed primarily for first-time homebuyers, immigrant and refugee families, aspiring homeowners, and individuals interested in building wealth through real estate.

Our workshops provide practical education, personalized guidance, and direct connections to trusted professionals who can help participants successfully navigate the homebuying process and work toward achieving the American Dream.

Through the program, participants learn how to:

Our First-Time Homebuyer Workshops equip individuals and families with the knowledge, tools, and professional relationships needed to successfully prepare for and purchase a home.

Topics include:

MAU African Homeownership Training

MAU is developing a culturally responsive homeownership pathway specifically designed for African immigrants, refugees, first-generation homebuyers, and other underserved families.

The curriculum includes.

Session 1: Financial Wellness

Participants build a strong financial foundation by learning about:

  • Banking in the United States

  • Household budgeting

  • Financial goal setting

  • Saving and emergency funds

  • Understanding credit scores

  • Identity theft and fraud prevention
     

Session 2: Building and Strengthening Credit

Participants learn how to improve their financial profile and prepare for mortgage qualification through:

  • Reviewing credit reports

  • Correcting credit-report errors

  • Credit-building strategies

  • Credit repair

  • Debt-management planning

  • Reducing debt-to-income ratios

  • Saving for a down payment

  • Preparing for mortgage preapproval
     

Session 3: The Homeownership Roadmap

Participants receive an overview of the steps required to become homeowners, including:

  • Determining homeownership readiness

  • Understanding mortgage preapproval

  • Comparing mortgage products

  • Working with lenders

  • Understanding interest rates and closing costs

  • Accessing down payment assistance

  • Learning about Minnesota Housing programs

  • Selecting and working with a Realtor
     

Session 4: Buying a Home

Participants learn how to navigate the home search and purchase process, including:

  • Identifying housing needs

  • Searching for a home

  • Evaluating neighborhoods and properties

  • Making an offer

  • Negotiating a purchase agreement

  • Conducting a home inspection

  • Understanding an appraisal

  • Reviewing disclosures

  • Preparing for closing
     

Session 5: Life After Closing

Homeownership does not end at the closing table. Participants learn how to protect and maintain their investment through:

  • Home maintenance planning

  • Property taxes

  • Homeowners insurance

  • Utility and household expenses

  • Emergency repairs

  • Refinancing considerations

  • Avoiding foreclosure

  • Financial planning after purchase

  • Protecting household assets

Session 6: Community Wealth Building

This specialized MAU module extends beyond first-time homeownership and introduces participants to long-term wealth-building opportunities.
