Hon. Nancy Tembo, MP

Minister of Foreign Affairs

Nancy Tembo is a Malawian politician who has been a Member of Parliament since 2004 and serves as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Malawi Government since 2022. She is also a Member of Parliament (MP) representing Lilongwe City South West constituency in the National Assembly of the Republic of Malawi.

 

She assumes the chairmanship of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) cluster on the environment, natural resources, and tourism as Malawi becomes the Chair of SADC in August 2021.

 

She ran as an independent candidate after a bungled 2018 Malawi Congress Party (MCP) primary election and went on to secure a landslide victory in the 2019 Malawian general election.

 

As a Member of Parliament, Tembo served as the shadow Minister of Education, chair of the African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC)-Malawi and served on the Public Accounts Committee and Parliamentary Committee on Health where she chaired the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Reproduction. She also served on the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and Legal Affairs Committee.

Nancy has been an active and tireless campaigner for sustainable environment and natural resources management.  She is passionate about forest and ecosystem restoration, portable water for all, clean cooking mechanisms, climate change adaptation, and the enforcement of regulations on pollution. 

 

Hon Nancy Tembo has a Master of Science degree in Leadership and Change Management from Leeds Metropolitan University, United Kingdom.
